Preparing for the Behavior-Based Interview

Are You Ready for Your Federal Job Interview?

Interviews are opportunities to learn and to share information between the hiring official and the job applicant. Hiring officials and organizations are relying more and more on the Behavior Based Interview to help them select the best candidate for the job. Behavior Based interviews are not difficult, but unless you are prepared, they can prove to be quite unsettling. The objectives of this training are to assist job applicants in the preparation for the Behavior Based Interview.

Agenda of Learning Objectives:

  • Students will learn what to expect during the interview and how Behavior Based Interviews are conducted by organizations.
  • Students will learn the basics of how and why the interviewer asks behavior based questions and how the responses to the interview questions are evaluated.
  • Students will learn what to say when asked “Tell us about yourself and what makes you a good applicant for this position”.
  • Students will learn the basics of how to prepare for any type of job interview and what to ask at the end of the interview.
  • Students will learn how to respond to interview questions using a standardized format that will enable them to present their answers in a concise response the interviewer is seeking.

Instructor:  Tim Cannon, Retired Government SES, 0-6, US Army

Mr. Timothy W. Cannon has over 35 years of federal government and military experience with expertise in the areas of strategic human capital management, leadership coaching, counseling, transition assistance, organizational development, change management and facilitation. Mr. Cannon is a former member of the Senior Executive Service, is a retired Army Colonel, holds a Certificate in Leadership Coaching from the George Washington University and serves as an Adjunct Professor in HR Management for the University of Maryland University College.

After executive level human capital management positions with the Department of Treasury, the Library of Congress and the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency he began his HR consulting career with his firm Main Gate, LLC. Mr. Cannon has been involved in federal human capital management consulting work in health care, federal automated hiring systems and the defense sector. He is also a facilitator for the executive Transition Assistance Program for veterans under a contract with the Department of Labor and Department of Veteran Affairs.

Mr. Cannon has a BA degree in Public Service from the University of San Francisco, and a Master’s Degree in Human Resources Development from Webster University, St. Louis.
